We online search prospective employees if the employer specifically asks for it. As for unprofessional behavior, it depends on the culture of the employer.
We go through great lengths to learn the culture of our client employers and if they’re a particularly conservative one, then we are more apt to Google the candidate for social media blemishes (drug use reference, binge drinking references, etc). Regular party pictures aren’t blemishes—people are people!
Good uses of social media depends on the job. But to be generic I’ll say, demonstrations of civic duty/involvement, having a high net promoter score (klout), and/or having a balanced looking life that is aligned with our internal culture.”
